Kimmel Scrap Iron & Metal Co was founded in Iowa City, Iowa in 1930 by Ben Kimmel. The scrap yard was located near what would soon become The University of Iowa and was involved with recycling many of their metals and steel. Ben Kimmel built up his company and was a direct shipper to many local steel mills in the area. Rail cars were loaded by hand using wheel barrels and shovels.

In 1950 Morris Kimmel and his wife Ruth Mason moved to Detroit to start Kimmel Scrap Iron & Metal Co. Morris started with one truck, his company evolved into what it is today a leader in the recycling industry.

In 1978 Robert Kimmel joined the family business to continue the directive of his father and grandfather of treating our customers as we would like treated and protect your good name. Kimmel Scrap is now located on nearly 20 acres within the City of Detroit.
