To our loyal customers of Kimmel Scrap:

This month, I would like to talk about safely loading roll-off and lugger boxes with scrap material, and why it is so important to do it safely. Our roll-off trucks weigh around 70,000 lbs. empty, however, the max legal weight for a 7-axle truck is 137,000 lbs. This means that the truck could be hauling as much as 67,000 lbs. of material. Lugger trucks can weigh as much as 80,000 lbs. and weigh 35,500 lbs. empty. When moving this much weight there is little room for error, and there are ways you can help us move this material safely.
1.) Do not overload the box with material. Some plants can do this quickly, it is up to each plant to know their material and call in per-emptively in order to get the box switched.
2.) Load material evenly throughout the box. Loading excessive weight on one side could cause the trailer to tip over during the dumping process. Remember nearly 50% of the trucks total weight might be up in the air. Weight to one side could have catastrophic consequences.
3.) Do no load material over the top of the box. Material over the top of the box is more likely to fall out during transit, and could hit bridges or overpasses causing material to spill onto the road.

Please keep in mind that currently we are extremely busy with pick-ups, so it is important to call or email our dispatch well before the box is actually full. With your help, we will be able to safely haul your scrap material and keep everyone’s operations running smoothly.

Thank you,
